Smartphone Battery Charging

Is your smartphone battery suddenly being depleted too quickly? Your phone’s age, environment, and installed apps can all affect the battery and its ability to hold a charge.

Here are some tips to find out what’s draining your battery and how to remedy it.

#1 External Heat

Heat does affect smartphone battery performance, and you may even get a warning that your phone is overheating and needs to cool down. Be aware of this on very hot days (such as triple-digit temperatures), as temperatures high than 95°F can damage your battery’s ability to hold a charge. Keep your phone in a cool place, even removing the case (if you have one) as it can trap heat.

#2 Heavy Charging

The types of batteries most often used in smartphones measure their lifespan in charging cycles. If you use your smartphone heavily and charge it frequently, you might see a decrease in how long it holds a charge. The life of these types of batteries is usually between 300 and 500 discharge/charge cycles.

#3 App Culprits

Check your device settings to see if any installed apps have permission to send operate in the background or send notifications. Check the Battery area in the settings to see what power is used by apps. They might be draining your battery life even when you’re not actively using your phone. You can try to uninstall particularly bad apps, limiting their permissions, or stopping them from doing some of their battery-hogging activity.

#4 Screen Brightness

Your bright screen display may be using a lot of power too. Some things you can do minimize this are:

  • Adjust the screen brightness to bring it down
  • Using auto-brightness so your phone’s screen adjusts to surroundings
  • Changing the screen to turn off automatically after a short amount of time

#5 Other Settings

To save your smartphone battery, you can also try other settings such as putting your phone in Airplane Mode. Disabling Location Services (used for GPS and other apps) can also help you save your phone’s charge.
